Migraine & Headache Management – Dr. Mitesh Chandarana

Helping You Find Long-Term Relief from Chronic Headaches

Hello, I’m Dr. Mitesh Chandarana, a neurologist and movement disorder specialist. Along with treating Parkinson’s and tremors, I also help people who suffer from chronic headaches and migraines. As a migraine treatment doctor in Ahmedabad, I see many patients whose daily lives are affected by pain, nausea, and light sensitivity.

Headache is one of the most common problems — but when it keeps coming back or doesn’t respond to usual medicine, it’s time to see a specialist.

What Is Migraine?

Migraine is a type of headache that comes in episodes. It usually causes throbbing pain on one side, but can affect both sides too. People with migraine often feel:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • A need to rest in a dark room
  • Tiredness or mood changes after the headache

Some people also get aura before the headache — like seeing lights, lines, or losing vision for a few minutes.

When Do I Call It “Chronic Migraine”?

If you get headache more than 15 days a month, and at least 8 of them are migraine-type headaches, it is called chronic migraine.

This is the stage where you should not depend only on painkillers — but start preventive treatment.

Types of Headaches I Treat

As a headache and migraine specialist, I treat many kinds of headaches:

Migraine

With or without aura. Can happen with nausea, vomiting, or light sensitivity.

Tension-Type Headache

Mild to moderate pressure pain, usually on both sides. Can feel like a tight band around the head.

Cluster Headache

Very severe pain around one eye, often with watery eyes or nose congestion. Comes in “clusters” for days or weeks.

Medication Overuse Headache

When regular use of painkillers causes more frequent headaches.

How I Help You Manage Migraine

When you visit me, I first take a full headache history — how it started, how often it comes, what medicines you’ve taken, and what triggers your pain.

Then I suggest a personalized treatment plan, which may include:

1. Oral Preventive Medicines

These are not painkillers. They help reduce the number and strength of attacks. These include:

  • Anti-epileptic drugs
  • Beta blockers
  • Antidepressants
  • Calcium channel blockers

I adjust doses slowly and guide you at each step.

2. Botox for Migraine

If oral medicines don’t work or cause side effects, I may suggest Botulinum Toxin injections (Botox) for chronic migraine.

I give multiple small injections in areas like:

  • Forehead
  • Temples
  • Back of head
  • Neck and shoulders

This is done once every 3 months, and most patients notice fewer headaches after 2–3 sessions.

I have treated many migraine patients successfully using Botox therapy, especially when regular medicines fail.

3. Lifestyle & Trigger Management

I help you understand what triggers your migraine:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Dehydration
  • Certain foods
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress or screen time

We work on sleep, hydration, diet, posture, and mental health to reduce migraine frequency.

4. Treating Other Causes

Sometimes, headache is due to:

  • High BP
  • Sinus infection
  • Eye or neck issues
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Cervical spondylosis

If needed, I do scans or refer to other specialists to rule out serious problems.

What Makes My Treatment Different?

I don’t just give you a painkiller and send you home. I:

  • Listen to your full story
  • Help you track your headaches
  • Find the right medicine (and stop wrong ones)
  • Offer Botox if you need
  • Educate you about long-term control

As a neurologist for chronic headache, I treat the root cause — not just the symptoms.

When Should You See a Headache Specialist?

Please visit me if:

  • You get headaches more than 4 times a month
  • Your pain is very severe or you vomit every time
  • Painkillers are not helping anymore
  • You’re missing work or school because of headaches
  • Your vision, balance, or speech changes with headache
  • You feel anxious, depressed, or frustrated because of chronic pain

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Is migraine curable?

No, but it can be very well controlled. Many of my patients live almost pain-free with the right treatment.

Q2. Is Botox safe for migraine?

Yes, Botox is FDA-approved for chronic migraine. It’s safe, well-tolerated, and very effective in many patients.

Q3. Will I have to take medicine forever?

Not always. After control is achieved, we slowly try to reduce the dose or stop it if possible.

Q4. Is every headache a migraine?

No. That’s why I always do a proper diagnosis first — because different headaches need different treatments.

Q5. What if I’ve tried everything and nothing works?

Many patients feel this way before they come to me. I try to find what’s missing in your treatment — and fix it step-by-step.

Ready to Take Control of Your Headaches?
