Neurological Evaluations by Dr. Mitesh Chandarana

Finding the Right Diagnosis with Personal Attention & Expert Testing

Hello, I’m Dr. Mitesh Chandarana, a neurologist and movement disorder specialist. Before I start any treatment, I always begin with something very important — a complete neurological evaluation.

This is not just a checkup. It’s how I understand your symptoms, find the cause, and plan what to do next. If you’re feeling weakness, tremors, imbalance, memory loss, or unusual movements, a proper evaluation is the first and most important step.

What Is a Neurological Evaluation?

A neurological evaluation means a detailed checkup of your brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. It helps me find:

  • Where the problem is
  • What part of the nervous system is affected
  • Whether the cause is serious or not
  • What tests and treatments you need next

This step avoids confusion and wrong treatment.

When Should You Get a Neurological Evaluation?

You should visit me for an evaluation if you have:

  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Stiffness or slowness (like Parkinson’s)
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Muscle weakness or numbness
  • Memory loss or confusion
  • Changes in speech or vision
  • Unusual movements or spasms
  • Repeated falls or gait problems
  • Facial twitching, jerks, or body pulling
  • Sleep problems (acting out dreams, restless legs)

Even if your symptoms are mild — early diagnosis makes treatment easier and recovery faster.

What Happens During My Evaluation?

As a neurological evaluation doctor, I follow a simple and step-by-step process. You don’t need to be scared — it’s completely painless.

Here’s what I do:

1. History Taking

I sit with you and ask detailed questions:

  • When did the symptoms start?
  • What makes them better or worse?
  • Any other medical problems?
  • Family history?
  • What medicines you have tried?

I also ask about your sleep, mood, and memory — because the brain controls everything.

2. Physical and Neurological Exam

Then I do some simple tests to check:

  • Strength in your arms and legs
  • Reflexes and sensations
  • Walking and balance
  • Speech and facial movements
  • Eye movements and coordination
  • Muscle tone and tremors

This helps me find which part of the nervous system is affected — brain, spinal cord, or nerves.

3. Additional Tests (if needed)

Sometimes, I suggest further testing to confirm the diagnosis:

  • MRI Brain or Spine – for stroke, atrophy, tumors, etc.
  • Nerve Conduction Test (NCV/EMG) – for nerve and muscle issues
  • Blood Tests – for vitamin levels, copper levels (Wilson’s disease), thyroid, etc.
  • Cognitive Testing – for memory and thinking problems
  • Eye Exam – for movement or balance issues
  • Genetic Tests – in cases of hereditary ataxia or Huntington’s
  • Sleep Studies – for RBD or sleep apnea

All of these are based on your symptoms. I never recommend unnecessary tests.

Why Is This Important?

Because without a clear diagnosis, treatment is just a guess. A complete evaluation helps:

  • Avoid wrong medicines
  • Save time and money
  • Catch diseases early
  • Prevent permanent damage
  • Plan the right therapy — like DBS or Botox if needed

Many of my Parkinson’s and dystonia patients came to me after years of wrong diagnosis. After the right evaluation, they finally started getting better.

What Patients Say

I often hear this from patients:

“Doctor, I’ve seen many doctors, taken many tablets, but no one told me clearly what I have.”

This is why I take the time to listen, check, and explain. When you understand what’s going on, you feel more confident about your treatment.

Special Focus Areas

As a brain and nerve specialist, I have extra training in:

  • Movement disorders (Parkinson’s, tremors, dystonia)
  • Neurological causes of headaches and migraine
  • Wilson’s disease and hereditary conditions
  • Sleep disorders like RBD and restless legs
  • Functional movement disorders (where scans are normal but symptoms are real)

What Makes My Evaluation Different?

  • I do it personally – not by assistants
  • I take enough time with every patient
  • I check both motor and non-motor symptoms
  • I explain the results in very simple words
  • I plan what to do next — with you involved

Whether you need just advice, medicines, Botox, or DBS — this is where we begin.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Do I need to bring anything for the evaluation?

Yes, please bring your old reports, current medicines, and someone who knows your condition well. This helps me understand better.

Q2. How long does the evaluation take?

Usually, 30–45 minutes. But I take as much time as needed to understand your case fully.

Q3. Will you do scans on the same day?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no — depends on what I find in the exam. I only suggest tests that are needed.

Q4. Can I get a second opinion from you?

Of course. I often see patients who want clarity after seeing other doctors. I’ll go through your records and give an honest opinion.

Q5. Will you give a report?

Yes, you will get a written summary of my findings and treatment plan.
